Getting a professional eyeshadow effect isn’t as difficult as you might think. Eyeshadow application is just a matter of finding the best method and look for you and your personal style. Don’t worry if it requires a few tries to get it perfect. Experimenting is fun and you’ll be a pro in no time. These 10 tips can help you get started.
1. Make sure to start with a base coat on your eyes like you would on the other parts of your face. If you don’t have an eyelid primer, loose power works well or you can use your regular liquid foundation. This will give you an smoother, more even surface to work on.
2. Blend your colors. Then blend them again. You don’t want solid streaks of color if you’re going for an overall natural look.
3. If you really want dramatic eyes, dampen your brush first before dipping it in your eyeshadow, then apply. It will give you a drastically darker, dramatic color.
4. Use colors that enhance your eyes. Blue Eyes: wear purple, violet, taupe, grays, deep blue, and black. You can also take it up a notch with fuchsia, greenish blues, and silvers. Green Eyes: go with purple, plum, deep green, and browns. Accent colors that work great are: light green, golden, and bright purples. Brown Eyes look best with platinum, copper, peach, and beige or ecru – and you can dazzle with royal blue, orange or bright pink. All eyes look good with navy blue, baby blue, and dark grey.
5. Apply a brighter shadow in the inner corner of the eye to give them a more youthful look.
6. Want your eyes to look larger? Use a light color along the innermost corner, and a deeper tone in the center of the eye area.
7. Practice and then practice more. Pick a time where you can just explore different techniques and colors. Experiment with both daylight and night time. The more you practice, the more natural it will look. (and the faster you’ll get)
8. Learn your ‘zones’. Place a dark shadow only on the eyelids, starting at the lashes and going just up to the crease. Start your medium shade just below the eyelid crease and blend up to the brow bone. Place your highlight color at the very top, under your eyebrow.
9. When using a darker shade on the bottom of your eye, avoid corner to corner coverage. Instead, blend from the outer corner and fade to a stop directly below your pupil.
10. Buy a mid-range set of makeup brushes to start with. The foam applicators that come with your eyeshadow are great for bold lines, but a brush is key to natural blending and fading. Once you have your technique down pat, then explore higher end options to perfect it.
