Kid’s Academy, one of the most successful developers of apps for kids has released what might be their biggest app yet. They asked me to take 123 Tracing for a test drive with my four year old and see what we thought.

123 Tracing is an educational app designed for younger students who are learning how to write their numbers. This is a really cute game that lets children get use to tracing the numbers so they can move on to writing them on their own – a valuable skill as they prepare for school. Right from the start my son was enjoying the upbeat music and the sounds of the fireflies. The colors are bright and the illustrations are beautiful.

The game rewards players for correct form by filling their jar with fireflies. When the jar is full they get a cool medal and, more importantly, it means they’ve gone through all of their numbers and are really getting the hang of writing them. One thing I really liked about 123 Tracing was that he didn’t have to be perfect (so it wasn’t so hard that he quit), but he still has to pay attention and give it his best try (he’s actually learning the forms).

An added feature is the parent panel. From the home screen you can touch the parent button for 3 seconds to open several additional screens that help parents get even more out of the app. If you have more than one child playing you can create separate profiles with a photo and the child’s name. No more fussing “He started over!” or “She messed up my game!” Parents can also check on the progress of each child and see how well they are tracing each number.
All in all this is a tracing app that does just what is intended: engages the child with music, colors and animation while teaching number shape with the right level of difficulty for the age group and rewarding them for their progress. The app is easy to navigate, allowing children to play independently – while sing-a-longs and other features provide ways for teachers and parents to get involved.
The game is free to download, but does require an in-app purchase to unlock the entire range of numbers: iTunes App Store // Google Play for Android // Amazon App Store for Kindle
