2. Pump Up Your Red
If you have natural red highlights in your hair you can easily bring them out at home. Brew half a gallon of double strength black tea and let it cool to warm or room temperature. After shampooing, rinse your hair with the tea and let sit for a few minutes before rinsing with warm water. Added bonus: tea also increases shine!
3. Correct Chlorine Discoloration
If you have light colored hair chlorine from the gym pool or even your own tap water can have an unpleasant effect. To correct the discoloration dissolve 6 – 8 (non coated) aspirin in warm water. Rub the mixture into your hair and let it sit for 10 minutes.
4. Color Like the Pros
Have you ever had your stylist dump a bottle of color on your head and just rub it in? Me either. If you color (or touch up your roots) at home – get precision like a pro by using other brushes around the house. Wide makeup brushes and toothbrushes work exceptionally well for roots and hairlines. Simply rinse them out immediately afterwards using hot water and shampoo.
5. Brunette Blast
For dark hair, coffee is where it’s at. Before shampooing, rub a handful of coffee grounds into your scalp. It loosens dandruff, adds shine and brings out the deeper colors of your hair.
6. Get Rid of Tool Residue
Eventually your combs, picks and brushes get clogged up in residue from your hair and your styling products. Soak them overnight in hot water and shampoo. The next day swish them through clean hot water and then rub down with a hand towel before laying out to dry.
7. Shine it Up with….Beer?
Flat beer, to be precise. After washing your hair, rinse it liberally with warm, flat beer. Massage it into your hair and scalp before rinsing with warm water.
8. Intense Pre-Wash Conditioning
Soften coconut oil in the microwave (or on the stove…or out in the sun…you get the idea) until it’s a soft paste. Apply to your hair and scalp then cover with a shower cap. You can also use plastic wrap. Let sit for 20 minutes before shampooing.
9. Easy Daily Clarifier
For a natural, inexpensive daily clarifier – mix 1 cup of warm water with 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar and pour through your hair.
10. Don’t Toss That Avocado Out
For a power packed pre-wash nourishment – mash overly ripe avocados into a paste and apply to scalp and hair. Let the paste sit for 10 minutes and then rinse before washing.
11. Beach Hair…At Home
To get the bounce and waves of beach hair try this mixture at home: 2 teaspoons of sea salt, 1 cup of warm water and 4 drops of essential oil. Place in a spray bottle and shake until completely dissolved. Spritz on damp, clean hair and then run your fingers through – twisting sections to enhance the waves. Let air dry then comb through your hair with your fingers.
12. DIY Dry Shampoo
Touch up oily roots and stringy bangs with a simple DIY dry shampoo: Mix together 1 tablespoon of cornstarch, 4 tablespoons of water and 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol. Pour into a spray bottle and shake. Spray lightly on oily areas of your hair and air dry or dry on low with a hair dryer.
13. Control Frizz
Use your favorite essential oils to tame frizz and flyaways. Place a small amount in your palm, rub your hands together and then run your hands over your hair where there is frizz or fluff. Comb or brush as usual. Essential oils such as avocado, rosemary or lavender work best because they nourish hair while taming it.
14. Bleaching? Soothe your scalp.
To help keep the burn out of home bleaching, mix 2 packets of Sweet n’ Low and 1 ounce of skim milk with your hair color before applying. The reason this works is still unknown, but it’s a proven trade secret.
15. Keep Track of Your Ponytail Holders
Are you always digging around for a hair band or fighting to keep them from tangling with your hairbrush in the drawer? Use a clip shower curtain ring – thread the ring through all of your hair bands and then clip shut. Toss it in the drawer and you’ll never hunt for one again.
16. Remove Static From Your Hairbrush
If your hairbrush is having an electrifying effect on your hair spray it lightly with hairspray before brushing.
17. Quick Smell Fix
Washing is always the best way to remove odors like smoke or food from your hair. But, if you’re pinched for time, try mixing warm chamomile tea and 2 – 3 drops of your favorite essential oil in a spray bottle. Lightly mist your hair and toss with your fingers.
18. Tame Flyaways Fast
Did you just finish the perfect french twist…and now you’ve got rebel hairs waving in the breeze? Place about a dime size drop of hand lotion in your palm, rub between your hands and then gently smooth over the wispy areas.
19. More Frizz Busting
If your hair is especially prone to frizz after washing – the problem may be your towel. Try wringing your hair with paper towels instead. Paper creates less friction than cloth.
20. Create Volume with a Toothbrush
Does your hair tend to go flat at the roots and hairline? Instead of using a comb to tease the hair (which can cause damage) – try a soft, dry toothbrush to gently back-brush at the scalp.
