Spring has sprung and it’s time to open the windows and freshen your house. While odors can lurk in any room, one of the most common ‘stink sections’ is your kitchen. It’s where some of the best aromas are born…and where some of the worst grow. Sometimes all of the nooks and crannies where odor lives can seem daunting (and no one likes cleaning the kitchen to begin with). 1. REFRIGERATOR ODORS
To battle bad smells in your fridge, mix 3 tablespoons of baking soda with 1 quart of water in a spray bottle. Remove items from each shelf and spray with the baking soda mix. Let sit for just a a few minutes and then wipe clean with a wet sponge. After you’ve wiped down all of the surfaces, place flattened paper bags at the bottom of your produce drawers (to absorb leaks) and place an open box of baking soda to soak up future odors.
2. THE GARBAGE DISPOSAL
This is where old food goes to die….and after a while you can smell it. Once every week or so, cut up a fresh lemon and run it through your disposal. Not only will it remove odors, but it will also clean the disposal blades. If you use a metal cover for your drain, place it in your dishwasher to get rid of small bits of food and mold.
3. THE DIRTY SPONGE
Kitchen sponges are thought to be the highest concentration of germs and bacteria in your house. Some days the same can be said for the smell. They get stinky and slimy – but you can eliminate odors and germs with two simple methods: Place the sponge in your dishwasher or microwave it for 2 minutes (make sure to wet it first!).
4. COOKING ODORS
Sometimes what smells good today isn’t quite as nice the next day. Fried foods, burnt entrees and other strong aromas can linger for longer than we’d like. One easy way to freshen the room is to put out a bowl of white vinegar, baking soda or fresh coffee grounds over night.
5. The Dreaded Garbage Can
Did you just scrunch up your nose when you saw that photo? Probably so. We all know the smell that’s associated with a well used kitchen garbage can. It’s a lovely stew of every other unwanted kitchen smell, squished into one pungent package. Yummy.
