Back To School Feeling Great: 5 Tips For Keeping The Sniffles Away From The Kids

By Kenda -

Summer is winding down and, if your house is anything like mine, you’re starting to see a sneeze here and a cough there. Every year my kids battle last minute colds right before school starts. My oldest is hit the hardest and has even missed his first day before thanks to germs and other contagious intruders. Today I’m pairing up with Zep Commercial Cleaner #ZepSocialstars to share 5 tips for keeping your kids feeling their best so they’re ready to tackle a brand new school year.

1. Wash Your Hands

This seems so simple, right? It really is, and it can make a huge difference. Being on the go with family means our hands come in contact with a lot of outside germs at the park, the restaurant, the library and more. Washing your hands for 20 seconds with warm, soapy water can stop those germs in their tracks. If you have a hard time convincing the kids to take their time, make it fun by singing a song; “Happy Birthday” is the perfect length, but find one your kids love.

2. Increase the Outside Activities

With vacation winding down, you may be a bit tired. You might be ready to put your feet up and relax until school starts. I don’t blame you at all. But, getting the kids to go outside every day and move their bodies is a great way to boost their immune system. It helps your body stay strong and that means its better equipped to fight off any germ invaders.

3. Keep Hands Away from Eyes, Nose and Mouth

You can’t instantly wash your hands every time you touch something that might harbor germs and viruses. So, between washings, remind them to keep their hands away from their nose, eyes and mouth. The tissue in these areas quickly absorbs all manner of things that you might have picked up and can provide a fast track to getting sick.

4. If Coughs and Sneezes Happen – Contain Them

You’re probably going to get a few coughs and sneezes, even just from allergies. But, there’s no way to tell exactly what you’re tossing out into the air each time. Teach children to cough and sneeze into a tissue and throw it away immediately. If there is no time to grab a tissue, have them cough or sneeze into the crook of their elbow. This catches any expelled fluids or germs from their system and places them on an area that rarely touches other things.

5. Keep Cold and Flu Germs Off Your Household Surfaces

Germs and viruses are a lot tougher than you think. They can live on household surfaces for quite some time, putting everyone in danger of getting sick. Every place you touch – from your computer keyboard to your front door handle – can hold tons of germs just waiting to infect your body. Using a disinfectant cleaner, like Zep Quick Clean Disinfectant, can kill 99.9% of bacteria and even rhinovirus (cold) and flu virus when used correctly.
