Bento is traditionally a takeout or home-packed meal typical to Japanese dining. A conventional bento includes rice, fish or other meat, and vegetables; served in a box carrier. At times it may be served in a bowl as well. Although it is often made at home, they are also available in Japanese convenience stores, specialty shops, train stations and even department stores. Recently, the US has developed a fond attraction for this style of food preparation and the trend of creating a child’s lunch with healthy foods shaped into characters is becoming rapidly more popular. This is definitely on my ‘to do’ list. But, I admit…I may eat them all myself!
