Finally, some REAL comfort food

I’m really excited to tell you about this fantastic restaurant my husband took me to for our anniversary. It’s a cozy little spot called Sweet T Southern Kitchen; a place my husband found secretly to surprise me. I’m originally from Louisiana and grew up in Florida, so he knows how much I love my Cajun and Southern food. That’s not something easily found when you live in New England. He totally surprised me and so did Sweet T. Typically I don’t care for restaurant style Cajun food because…well…it’s not authentic. Tomato soup with a hunk of sausage in it is NOT gumbo. Just because you cover fish in pepper doesn’t make it qualify either. Sweet T doesn’t bother with that – they cook REAL Southern food.

Owned and operated by Michaun Fowler, this place is a great way to enjoy some fresh from scratch Southern favorites and maybe a few you’ve never had before. Meals are all made from scratch that day and served cafeteria style so there’s no waiting to eat (I loved that).

I think my mouth started watering the minute I stepped foot in the door. They change their menu daily so you have a fresh set of choices each time you visit. We had delicious dishes like fried catfish, spicy gumbo, candied yams, fried okra, chicken fried steak and home made macaroni and cheese.

As if the quality and flavor of the food wasn’t enough reason to make this my new favorite restaurant – the prices sealed the deal. An adult can leave with a full stomach for under $10.

Unfortunately Big Man wasn’t with us; he was enjoying an afternoon out with his grandmother. If he’d been there I think he would have eaten enough for 4 people. It was just so delicious. And the portions were huge! We were completely full and had shared our lunches with little man (he really digs the fried okra).

And I can’t forget the fresh brewed, oh so sweet iced tea. I didn’t realize until I moved out of Florida that sweet iced tea is not on every menu (although California was much worse than Massachusetts with it’s unsweetened fruit swirl infusion …things..). It’s a main beverage in the South – not so much everywhere else. I think I drank 3 glasses total. I really wanted to take it home with me.

We all can’t wait to get back and enjoy their Sunday brunch next time. Is it bad to have dreams about a restaurant?
