With my love of all things Japanese and my toddler sharing my love of sushi – how could I resist a Sushi Candy Kit direct from Japan? The instructions are in Japanese (of course) so I spent a few minutes on YouTube watching video tutorials of how this all went together.

Each jelly candy represented a different part of a sushi roll. The kit contains candy versions of: sticky rice, egg, tuna, seaweed wrap, salmon roe and soy sauce. The rice was the coolest part; it did this crumble thing that made it look just like a rice ball. The tray also has embossed molds so that the egg has the texture of egg, the tuna has lines like real tuna etc.

Little Man loved helping fill the sections with water and then showing off each ingredient he made.

The salmon roe was the most fun to create. Slowly drip one candy into another and you have instant, solid “fish eggs”. They tasted fruity.

After letting the candy sit and become solid, it was time to start putting together our ‘sushi’.

“Kiriko” – tuna sushi

It took a while for him to get his seaweed wrap just right. I was patient; sushi can’t be created in an instant!

The finished plate: [L to R] Kiriko (tuna), Tamagoyaki (egg) and Ikura (salmon roe)

I was amazed at all the different Popin’ Cookin’ Kits on Amazon – Mini cakes, hamburgers, animals, dumplings and more.

I was surprised at how UNsweet it was. There was a hint of sugar, but nothing near our sugar-rush-inducing American candy. The jelly parts were a little softer than I’d expected, but Little Man thought they were delicious and said, “This was a fun craft, mom!” So it was totally worth it.
