As a Japanophile and (self proclaimed) professional sushi eater, I must also admit my total addiction to edamame. Waiting for a beautiful plate of Spicy Tempura Roll is only tolerable if I have a steaming, salty bowl of the beans in front of me to pass the time. Even my *nearly three year old son demands ‘green peas’ when we arrive at the restaurant. I’m also a fan of learning how to procure your favorite foods on your own and in your home. So, when I found out there was an Edamame Growing Kit there was no hesitation about wanting one on my own windowsill.

The kit comes with six edamame seeds, soil, soil net, Japanese beer planting pot and nesting basket.

Why beer? For centuries, the Japanese tradition is to have edamame with your beer. Think of it as a much healthier version of the American scene where that weird guy hogs the peanut bowl at the end of the bar as if he hasn’t eaten in eight days – minus the hogging…and the weirdness. If you have a husband or a boyfriend that you can never think of what to buy them – this might be perfect. Easy to grow, beer themed and you can eat it afterwards! If it’s not your cup of tea edemame – they have plenty of other great gifts for men here.
Place the soil net over the hole in the bottom of the pot. Then pour in your soil.
Slowly, and evenly, pour water into the soil. Stop when the water leaks out under the pot. (don’t forget a dish underneath)
Use your finger or thin utensil (I used a chopstick) to make six evenly spaced holes in the soil – just below the surface. Not too deep – you don’t want to bury them at the bottom.
Drop one edamame seed into each hole and cover gently with the soil.
Set the pot in the nesting basket and place in a windowsill until they sprout. In warmer weather they can then be placed outside to grow.
And that easy – you have your own little edamame garden. Mine are still in the growing phase so I’m not sure how many each seed will yeild, but research says with optimal growing conditions you can usually get 1/4 of a pound of pods from one plant. That’s plenty for your next sushi night at home. A friend of mine even mentioned that this would be a great baby shower gift – representing the growing baby as the plant grows. How cool is that? You can find other unique baby shower gifts here.
