I’m 40. I’m not “pushing” 40. I’m not “almost” 40. I’m not “over 30”. I am 40. And, I’m basically okay with that. I love how much experience and knowledge comes with those years. Also, the many great memories. But, I think I could do without the wrinkles. Not all of them, some add character when I laugh or smile. But, I wouldn’t be sad if the frown lines between my eyebrows just mysteriously disappeared one day.
I thought moving from sunny California to Massachusetts almost 6 years ago would help my skin. Less heat should mean less wrinkles…right? Well, according to an analysis done with RoC®Skincare and Sperling’s Best Places to determine an overall “Wrinkle Index” score to rank the U.S. states, that’s not really how it works.

Massachusetts is 5th highest for wrinkles. Places like California, Hawaii and Florida are way down on the list. Wait…what? Up in the North East, we don’t bask at the beach 3/4 of the year. We don’t hike …ok…I don’t hike. We probably spend more time indoors (especially the entire winter season). Have you SEEN most of us? Pale isn’t an adjective, it’s a way of life. So what’s going on?

Extreme temperatures and long commute times…. DARN YOU! Ok yes, traffic here is just horrible. Have you tried to leave Boston at 4:30 on a Friday? Just give up. And, every year our winters get colder and our summers get hotter. I just didn’t realize how much those things could affect your skin. - All That Sunshine is Serving Them Well: States such Hawaii (Ranked #47), Mississippi (Ranked #31), and Louisiana (Ranked #29), while considered to be the sunniest states, actually have the lowest rates of skin cancer and averted being ranked in the top 25 most prone wrinkle states
- High Health Alert South of the Mason-Dixon: Southern states such as West Virginia (Ranked #3), Tennessee (Ranked #8) and Kentucky (Ranked #7) ranked in the top 10 due to their generally poor diet and high percentage of smokers
