How To Keep Electronics Safe

They hold your work, your memories and more. Protect Them.

Sometimes I am just unlucky. Take, for instance, the summer I had to replace every single electronic I owned. You read that right: every one. It was many years ago and I was living in Florida with a bad storm rolling in. I’d purchased a surge protector from a hardware store so I thought I had nothing to worry about. Right. Lightening hit so close to the house that the protector and my desktop were blasted. My computer was totally fried and, of course, the warranty on the surge protector had run out.

Fast forward a few days and I’m at a birthday pool party. I’m still mourning the money I had to shell out for a new computer when a friend decides I’m not having nearly enough fun sitting BY the pool. No. I need to go IN with everyone else….and my cell phone. Strike two. Bank account, here I come.

Oh but wait… why should my television be left out of the fun? Before the month was over, my (then) 5 year old son decided he wanted to know what would happen when his magnet set got up close and personal with the tv screen. The giant green circle that remained was his answer.

By the time a new month rolled around I was not only broke, but cursing every electronic device in my house. If tablets had existed back then, I’m sure I would have found a way to trash that too. It was a wake up call. You never really understand how much you rely on them until they’re fried, soaked and a nice shade of emerald. Over the years I’ve learned a few things about electronics and how to make sure they last much longer. Here are a few tips on how you can make sure your favorite phone, tablet, computer and more hangs around for as long as it should.

  • Keep That Bulky Case
    • It’s so tempting to go with a thinner, more attractive case for your devices. However, the thinner the case is – the less protection it provides. If your phone or tablet leaves the house with you often, opt for a thicker, more rugged case. After the first drop down the stairs, you’ll be glad you did.
  • Storms Mean Time To Unplug
    • It’s hard to resist finishing up that one work assignment when a storm is rolling in. But, it only takes one lightening strike to completely wipe out your computer or any other electronic plugged into a wall outlet. Don’t rely on surge protectors. As soon as you know a storm is on the way, unplug devices at the power source and wait for the danger to blow over.
  • Keep it Cool
    • If you’re going to be out in the sun – say you’re spending a day at the beach with the kids – you want to take measures to make sure your phone, laptop or tablet can stay cool. Don’t set it in direct sunlight, remove the case if your phone feels warm and never keep electronics in the car.
  • Moving? Avoid the Dust.
    • If you need to pack up and/or store your electronics for a period of time (moving, storage unit, etc) make sure you wrap the items in paper or cloth. Never wrap in plastic for extended amounts of time in storage because the plastic can heat up and stick to your devices.
  • Water play? Leave the electronics inside.
    • Don’t rely on cousin Jeff to keep his promise about not throwing you in the pool or trust that your little niece won’t bust a water balloon right next to you. You know your phone is in your pocket, but the person hefting you into the deep end already forgot. You never know when accidents (or pranks) might happen so if water is going to be involved, just leave the electronics inside where they’ll be safe.

Cover Your Electronics With Insurance

From cracked screens to broken internal parts, big damage can result from even the smallest accident. Your electronics may come with a manufacturer warranty, but those lapse as quickly as 90 days after purchase. Just because your warranty expires doesn’t mean your chances of damage go down. With electronics insurance, your devices are still protected against electrical failures and mechanical breakdowns.
