Growing up in the South, I thought we had the license on food + family. You couldn’t have more than two family members in the same space without serving something to eat. If you want to visit family, you don’t say “What time should I come over?” you say “What time is dinner?”
Once I started moving around the country, I realized: that’s every family, everywhere. Our time in California showed me that it’s more often lunch or brunch, but a meal was still the centerpiece. Now that I live in Massachusetts it’s a wonderful mix of different regional traits. In the Northeast I’ve been to everything from sit-down dinners by candlelight to backyard bbqs with drinks in a big cooler. But, the one common factor? Family and friends are there to share it with you.
Just recently our family and friends had a pretty big reason to celebrate: My oldest son was not only graduating high school, but also preparing for Army basic training.
Instead of gathering around a table, we set everything up outside. We were expecting beautiful weather and we wanted to take full advantage of it. We put up a big food spread for 30+ guests and everyone enjoyed the extra space. I loved how everyone could just walk around in the sunshine, visiting, laughing and – of course – eating. Afterwards, while the adults went back for seconds, the kids were able to run and play in the grass. It was perfect.
Could we have still enjoyed the time if we’d spent it inside around the table? Of course! But, that’s the great thing about coming together over a meal: it doesn’t matter where you are as long as you have family, friends and food. A restaurant, the park, or your backyard.. you’re making memories. And, the right food can make a great gathering awesome.
