Manny Ramirez, former MLB star, was arrested in Broward County, Fla., on Monday night and charged with domestic battery.
Let me start this off by saying I never liked Manny Ramirez. I’m a major RedSox fan and every time I saw him acting like a fool on the diamond it made my blood boil. The man was a giant ball of fury blended with a cocky, self entitled attitude. No matter who you’re talking about, that combination spells trouble. He was constantly pitching a fit during games and starting fights with other players – even the ones on his own team. When you have that much of a rage issue it’s bound to spill over into your personal life.
From FOXsports.com:
According to a police report obtained by the Associated Press, Ramirez and his wife were arguing in their bedroom when he slapped her face, causing her to hit her head on their bed’s headboard. She told the deputy she was afraid the situation would escalate and called police.
Ramirez denied hitting his wife, according to the police report. Ramirez’s wife had injuries consistent with her story, but did not want medical treatment.
Manny is, of course, denying he hit his wife; blaming the fall on grabbing her shoulders (because grabbing and holding onto someone always makes them fling into furniture – right).
I’m not even going to dig deeper into the story to find out details about the argument itself because, as far as I’m concerned, there is no reasonable excuse for hitting a woman unless she is threatening your life with a deadly weapon and you are backed into a corner with no physical way to escape. This was clearly not the case for Mr. Ramirez.
Coincidentally, Ramirez was removed from Major League Baseball last April after he (once again) tested positive for growth enhancing drugs (steroids, in other words). Apparently Manny’s roid rage stuck around even after he left the field.
I hope this doesn’t turn out to be yet another story of the authorities going easy on their favorite sports star and the wife reconsidering pressing charges because she can’t imagine not living without the paycheck. Then again…Manny isn’t making too many new fans (or paychecks) these days. Let’s hope the charges stick.
A hearing is scheduled Tuesday to determine his bond.
