MATCHA: The Super Green Tea

By Guest Author -

Have you heard of the super green tea called Matcha?

The benefits of green tea have long been heralded as a powerful weapon against aging, overall better health and more tolerable caffeine than coffee. But did you know there was a super green tea?

Matcha is a form of high quality green tea that is covered to provide shade and enhance the green color before it is picked. The enhanced green color increases the chlorophyll in the plant which is a potent detoxifier.

One of the reasons Matcha is called a super green tea is because one cup of Matcha is like drinking 10 cups of regular green tea. Who has time to drink that much tea…and then the subsequent trips to the bathroom?

Cup for cup, Matcha has more bang than regular green tea. For example, did you know that Matcha has 6.2x higher antioxidant levels than goji berries? It also has 7x higher antioxidant levels than dark chocolate, 17x the antioxidant level of wild blueberries and 60.5x more antioxidants than spinach.

Aside from being an amazing antioxidant, Matcha has been known to also help increase metabolism and lose weight, lower anxiety, lower your bad (LDL) cholesterol, increase energy and help fight cancer.

While Matcha is relatively new to North America, it is very important to the Japanese tea ceremony and a coveted ingredient. As a matter of fact, in Japan (and throughout Asia) you can find many prepared foods with Matcha like chips, candy and ice cream.

There are many ways to consume Matcha. Since it is a finely ground powder that is dissolved into the water (juice, milk, etc.) you can get the highest level of nutrients as compared to the boiling of water and steeping green tea leaves.

Here are some tips to making the perfect cup of Matcha tea:

  • Do not put Matcha in boiling water – it will “burn” the powder and make it taste bitter and grassy. Instead, boil your water and let it sit for 3-5 minutes. Then add in ½ tsp of Matcha powder (to start).
  • Whisk the Matcha and water until it’s dissolved – you will see foam or froth at the top of the cup. You should not see any lumps of Matcha powder. If you do not have a whisk, you can use a blender cup or put the drink in a container with a tight lid and shake vigorously.
  • You can add a bit of sweetener or milk to taste – try it plain to start.
  • Only use as much water as you need to get the consistency you need to finish the drink in 3 – 5 gulps. Matcha tea is not to be sipped, if it is left sitting too long the powder will sink to the bottom of your cup.

Not a fan of drinking hot tea? Since Matcha is a fine powder, you can add it to popcorn, your regular morning smoothie, yogurt or even an ice cream topping. If you do an internet search for “Matcha recipes” you find a ton of ideas to inspire you!

So now that you know a little more about the super green tea known as Matcha, how would you like to try it? Would you like to drink it or use it as an ingredient in your food? Either way you’ll get the amazing benefits.
