Mother’s Day – Take Two

By Kenda -

Thursday before last,  my husband said, “Sunday is Mother’s Day.”  I really should have Googled it. Instead, I got up on May 4th and had a great morning with the kids, complete with colorful drawings and copious amounts of hugs and kisses. A bit later I decided to call my mother and wish her a happy day. My father seemed shocked to hear from me at 8:30 am on a Sunday. Go figure.

“Well hey!”
“Hi, Dad.”
“Um….what’s up?”
“I’m calling mom. ….(silence)….it’s Mother’s Day. You know, when you call your mom?”
– Laughter from the other end of the line –
“No, it’s not.”
I thought he was joking. “Yeah it is……isn’t it?”
“Nope.  (shouting to my mother) Your daughter thought it was Mother’s Day!”
To which my mother replied, “That just means I get two calls instead of one.”

After I finished kicking myself for not taking the time to actually check the calendar I realized, “So what?”  Okay, so maybe it wasn’t May 11th. Facebook wasn’t full of ode to Mother status updates and restaurants weren’t offering me free breakfast. Did it really matter? Not at all. We decided to just continue having a family day, national holiday or not. And, it really was a great day.

You know what? The next day was great too. And the next…and the next.

I love holidays. There’s nothing wrong with picking a day to recognize what our mothers (or fathers, grandparents et all) have done for us and I plan to celebrate it in years to come – cards, gifts, breakfast and all. But this year I learned a great lesson: every day is a good day to show your family you love them.

A very happy Mother’s Day to everyone! Enjoy your day, and then keep the hugs, kisses and family time going – all year long.
