My Battle With UPS So My Butt Wouldn’t Hurt

By -

I’ve had the same computer chair for almost three years. It wasn’t that great to begin with: a box store $30 special that looks like it belongs in a dorm room instead of behind my monster oak desk. Considering I live at my desk and wheel everywhere I go within my office space, you can imagine how quickly it’s performance deteriorated. I adapted here and there; a pillow when the padding failed, stopped spinning to the left because I had the sensation of going downhill, adjusted to failed hydraulics that made me feel like a five year old in daddy’s chair and trained myself to not to recline unless I wanted to tumble backwards. All of this because I didn’t want to spent $80 on a replacement. Well, I finally gave in and decided to get an upgrade.

I ordered from Amazon Prime because free 2-day shipping is flippin’ awesome. Along with being cheap I’m also impatient, so getting what I want within 48 hours is a requirement for my peace of mind. If I had the resources I’d order overnight shipping on everything just because I hate waiting. So, you may be able to imagine my discomfort when UPS kept my chair for a week.

I knew both UPS and FedEx had been raked over the coals the past month because they couldn’t keep up with their delivery promises. Snow is a pain in the rear. Here, in my area of Massachusetts, we had a little snow as well; less than a foot. While 12 inches of snow can be a problem, it’s only for a day or so. By that time it’s cleared out by plows, traffic and mother nature. I realized there might be a 24 hour delay, but we were nowhere near a storm situation. I had no idea one day of bad roads would result in my chair sitting at a delivery facility, 12 minutes away, for seven days.

Now, before you start yelling at me about driving conditions, safety of drivers and ‘It’s just a chair – grow up!” let me show you what our ‘emergency conditions beyond UPS control’ looked like:

As a friend said to me, “It must be the leaves.”  They do look a  little intimidating.

For days I checked their website, tracked my packages and kept watch by the window. A new chair is serious business. According to their state of the art tracking, I was still set for a Friday delivery. Only…Friday had come and gone. I finally gave up after three more days and started contacting them. First Twitter. They told me to email their help department. I emailed them. They responded with ‘emergency conditions outside of our control’. So, I contacted them on Facebook. They told me to email. I said I already emailed. They said, “Well you need to respond to the email so we can give you information.” Of course. Because the first email is only a test. You have to prove you really, really, REALLY want your stuff by begging before they actually tell you anything. Duh. Only thing is, I’d already responded. Twice. Finally the email rep told me “…the center that has your packages is not able to provide us with a delivery date.” Basically the customer service version of “We’ll get to it when we get to it. Chill.”

Joking, I said to my husband, “Wouldn’t it be funny if it showed up right now? What if their system is so messed up that they don’t even know where my stuff actually is.”  To which he replied, “It can’t be that bad.”

Two hours later….

I am so glad you got a new chair – it looks MUCH more comfy! But I’m sorry you had to wait so long for it.

You should have just driven to the facility and asked for it! ;)

  2. LOL! That is frustrating. On happier thoughts your new office chair looks amazing. I now want a new one and better order it after this storm passes or I might not get it for a month!

  3. I having a standing order of diapers, shipped by UPS monthly. We ran out of diapers because our order was a week past due, so when I called them I was told it was because the package was damaged. That is when they updated the tracking info to say it was damaged in shipping. They didn’t contact me or the seller but luckily (it was Amazon) the seller refunded me and will resolve it on their own. I made a late night run to a 24 hour pharmacy to get diapers when I realized we had one left (gah- that is what i get for depending on orders to keep me on track and not tracking how many diapers I had left myself).

Usually UPS rocks, this was the first time this happened to me.

  4. Hey, at least your driver can read. Mine delivered our two Otterbox cases (so about $100 of product) to an address 3-4 blocks away, not even CLOSE to what ours reads. Luckily the person who lived there drove it to us and left it, but what a pain!

  5. aww I understand the waiting game and how it can be frustrating when it’s supposed to be delivered on a certain day and doesn’t show. The new chair looks awesome though.

Holy crap, your old office chair sucks! I’m glad you made an upgrade. We have a decent office chair too, I’ve found that my back hurts much, much less after a long day compared to when I used to work at the kitchen table. LOL
