Making Memories: Washing the Dishes with Mom

By -

One thing kids (typically) love to do is wash dishes. I’m not sure what’s so fascinating about the process, but both of my boys begged to scrub the plates just as hard as they begged to have a second cookie. Now Little Man is old enough to climb up on a chair and get bubbly, just like his big brother before him. But – also much like his brother – I know it won’t last long. So, I’m enjoying it while I (we) can.

It’s become the morning routine. After me or Daddy wash the sharp knives and glass dishes, Little Man gets to roll up his sleeves and scrub down the plastic, forks and spoons. Then he brushes his teeth. It’s an odd schedule, but he loves it. Each morning after breakfast he dashes over to the sink, peeks in and says, “Mommy, are there dishes for me?” The answer is always yes because we purposely leave some for him from the night before. Some days, depending on how many times I cook, he gets to wash dishes 2 or 3 times.

Because his hands are in dish water almost as often as mine are – the soap does matter. I formerly used a brand that was the most grease fighting I could find. I’m almost 40 so I don’t pay as much attention to my hands since they’re showing their age already. But, now I have soft baby hands in the water with me. We’ve been trying out the new Soft Touch line from Palmolive. We have one with aloe and one infused with Vitamin E. The extra moisturizing comes in handy (no pun intended) – especially since he usually asks to wash his hands with the dish liquid instead of the hand soap.

Little man likes the Vitamin E Soft Touch because of the sweet scent (and it’s a really cool shade of pink). Personally, I like the Aloe better; it seems to last longer in the sponge and work a little bit harder. Either way – I feel better knowing the soap is more gentle on not only his skin, but also mine.

Soaked, but having a great time!
