We had a new baby and moved cross country before we even celebrated our first anniversary.
I remember the day my husband said, “Honey, my parents are selling their house.” I knew exactly what he was thinking: he wanted to buy it. It was the one he and his brother grew up in; a beautiful two story home surrounded by trees. It was a huge difference from our condo in Los Angeles. We now had two children and were quickly running out of room (and patience with the hustle and bustle of city living). The only snag? His parents lived in Massachusetts.
It was a big decision, but one we barely had to think about.
We wanted the house and the quiet, beautiful neighborhood that went with it. So, how would we get there? We couldn’t fly; we wanted to keep our vehicle. We were going to have to ship our possessions and drive. We waited until our oldest was going to be visiting my parents in Florida so he could escape the hours in the car, and we set off – me, my husband, and our youngest – on a 3,000 mile adventure.

It took almost a week to go from Los Angeles to Massachusetts, and each day presented something new and amazing. We’ll never forget experiences like laying in the grass while a storm crawled over the Colorado mountains, or rolling the windows down to take in the clean Utah air as we drove through beautiful valleys.
Unfortunately, the adventure part wasn’t always fun.
By day two, our son had a severe cold. We would pull into a motel sometimes after 11 pm and all we wanted to do was sleep, but he couldn’t. We took turns rocking him while the other slept. In Colorado we learned, the hard way, that our SUV didn’t like high altitude as it coasted to a full stop going through a mountain range and had to be towed. When we hit Kansas, and the temperatures hit the high 90s, our truck’s air conditioner died.
It also taught us that we could do anything, if we worked together. I remember saying to my husband, as we finally pulled up to our (soon to be) new home – tired, dusty and so glad to be done – “Hey, we didn’t kill each other. That’s a good sign.”
Marriage is about finding many things. A soul mate, a best friend, a partner in crime and a co-captain for new adventures. This year you may be invited to witness friends and family say their vows with their own co-pilot. Why not gift them something different, something adventurous? Target has a wedding registry that contains more than just new dishes and matching robes. You can gift (or request) a wide range of products that say, “Get out and make memories!”
