One of the more interesting stops during Brandcation Blog Cabin, for me, was the Titanic Museum. I’m not much of a Titanic aficionado by any means, but I was immediately swept away in the history and fascination of this majestic – and tragic – ship and the passengers who sailed on her.
Founded by John Joslyn, co-leader of the 6 million dollar exploration of the sunken Titanic, spent 44 days at sea exploring the depths of this ghostly ship and retrieving the artifacts from it. Those artifacts are now on display at the Titanic Museums in Pigeon Forge, TN and Branson, MO. Get a breath away from authentic passenger items, cabin furnishings and more as you take a self guided tour. Don’t worry, the Titanic staff are on hand to answer any questions you have. I was amazed at their knowlege.
The Grand Staircase — The famous staircase has been built from the original blue prints, using the same exact materials. At over one million dollars cost to build, this staircase is hand-crafted with wood inlay, beautiful glass features and sculpture. Now you can walk the steps just like the world’s rich and powerful when they went to their rooms or down at night to dine and mingle.
See an authentic recreated first class state room – complete with original, salvaged furnishings, lighting, fireplace and more. It will take your breath away as you listen to the history of those who stayed in this room aboard that fateful ship.
There were two features of the museum that had a profound effect on me. First was the deck (above) where you could touch a man-made iceberg and place your hand in 28 degree water; the same temperature the survivors had to remain in on that fateful night. Second was something smaller; you could almost miss it if not paying attention. There were hallways recreated just as if you were walking aboard the Titanic and, at one corner, was a narrow stairwell. When I paused in front of the stairwell, water began to flow down the stairs. There was a plexi-glass partition halting the water from reaching me, of course. But, to imagine the sight of that while on the boat….amazing and terrifying.
Features of the Titanic Museum:
- Receive a Boarding Pass of an actual Titanicpassenger/crew member
- View $4.5 million + of Titanic artifacts
- Walk the $1 Million exact replica of Titanic’s Grand Staircase
- Touch an iceberg and feel 28-degree water
- Shovel “coal” in Titanic’s Boiler Room
- Learn how to send an SOS distress signal
- Experience the Sloping Decks of the ship’s stern as she descended
- Sit in an actual size lifeboat and hear true passenger stories
- Visit Tot-Titanic – an interactive area for young guests 8 and under
- Discover your passenger’s fate in the TitanicMemorial Room (mine survived!)
This was an experience that both intrigued me and made me sad. I’m glad there is a place where we can remember those who perished and hear of those who survived. It is an amazing history you shouldn’t miss. You only THINK you know the story of the Titanic…. now get the facts.
